Make Dance a Career with Professional Swing Dancing
Believe it or not, there is such a thing as professional swing dancing. You can actually make a lucrative career out of this fun and exciting form of dance. Swing dance originated in the mid 1920s at the Savoy Ballroom, a happening night spot in Harlem. From there, this form of dance became popular nationwide throughout the 1930s, 1940s and beyond. In the 1940s, swing dance studios, competitions and clubs began popping up all over the place. In addition, variations on original swing also began taking shape.
Today, swing dancing is as popular than ever if not more so. There are all kinds of opportunities for swing dancers. The first thing you should do is become well versed in the different types of swing, such as Savoy swing, East Coast swing, West coast swing and Carolina Shag, for example. East Coast swing is an example of competitive swing dancing as it was developed for this very purpose. You might be wondering how you can make a living with dance. As a matter of fact, there are lots of ways. One way is to perform at tournaments which award cash prizes.
In order to do this, you will need to join a professional dance troupe devoted to competitive dance. This may include lots of travel. Another way to make money with dance is to offer your services to movies, commercials and instructional videos. You've probably seen the famous Gap ads featuring swing dancers, right? They are great examples of professional swing dancers. Many dancers go to dance schools or major in dance at their universities, others are not formally educated but extremely talented. Another way, and probably the steadiest way, to earn money as a swing dancer is by teaching.
Professional swing dancing teachers can make a little or a lot of money depending on their level of expertise, how big their classes are and how much they charge. Depending on these factors, you can make a meager living or a very good one. Many teachers supplement their teaching income with money made from competing or performing. Others go on to create their own instructional materials like books and DVDs to sell. The point is that there are ways to make substantial amounts of money doing what you love -- even if what you love is swing dancing!
